I actually got into an argument with someone yesterday about something like this.  He posted a status saying, “I think it’s hilarious how people can be called intelligent when their grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary are all utterly atrocious.”  He’s only 16, and a good kid, so I didn’t actually say, “EXCUSE ME BITCH?”, but I thought it.

Then I introduced him to the fact that my best friend in high school had difficulties reading and writing and as such was often passed over for the smart people things that I was sent to (because I could do those things), but she is genuinely one of the most intelligent people I know.  She just blows me away in math and science things, and is getting her doctorate when I (someone who passes his “intelligence” test) can’t do a Master’s because the idea of more schooling makes me sick.

And there’s my dad, who dropped out of school in 8th grade and calls me, my mom, and my gramma on the phone to make sure he’s spelling simple words correctly, but who is quick witted and can figure shit out, which I am terrible at.

Being good at books is not in any way the same as being smart.  I should know - I’m good at books, but I am not smart.  Now, I’m not saying Sam is stupid.  Sam is intelligent, too.  I’m just saying you can’t call Dean dumb.  Dean is extremely smart, for all he doesn’t do books and cleverness.
